Abbey Scholarship
William Gharraie is an abstract painter whose fascination with Italian painting of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance will make his time in Rome exciting and productive.
Abbey Fellows
Philip Allen lives and works in London and is looking forward to being a stranger in a new and different environment in order to re-invigorate his practice. Drawing is the back bone of his practice and he plans to study examples of the Baroque in Rome. He also looks forward to being influenced not only by Rome itself but also by the community of other artists and scholars at the British School at Rome.
Lothar Götz is a German painter who has been working in the UK since 1996. He is senior lecturer in painting at the University of Sutherland. He draws his inspiration from architecture and plans to use his time in Rome to develop a new series of drawings based on the architecture and buildings of Rome.
Martin Westwood plans to use his time in Rome to have a period of concentrated practice in the scholarly environment of the British School at Rome. He also believes that living in Rome will give him then time to learn and reflect upon the relation of the ancient and modern models of economy through architecture, imagery and the minting of coins - subjects that inspire and are of concern to him.
