1. Scholarship/Fellowship
Please read our publicity material carefully and decide which award is most
suitable for you - you cannot apply for both. Note that the 9-month
Scholarship is normally awarded to an exceptionally promising emergent painter,
while the 3-month Fellowships are designed for mid-career painters with an
established record of achievement. It is emphasised that in both cases the
Council is looking for evidence of high artistic achievement and
potential.
2. Eligibility Abbey Awards are open to
citizens of the UK and the USA and also to nationals of other countries,
provided that they can show that they have been resident in the UK or the US
for at least 5 years. Documentary proof will be asked for if such a candidate
is selected for interview. There is no age limit.

you have been shortlisted. In this case your referees will be contacted and you
will be asked to come for an interview in London in early March, at your own
expense. US candidates may be interviewed by telephone, but experience shows
that their chances are better if they are interviewed in person.
If you
are not shortlisted, you will be informed by late February.
7. All candidates interviewed will be told the result without delay,
and those unsuccessful will have material returned to them as
above. The 2008 Scholar's and Fellows' names will be passed to
the British School.
8. Selection criteria In
making awards, the Abbey Council Selection Committee will assess all
applications using the following criteria : the quality of applicants' creative
output, the suitability of their qualifications, and the appropriateness of
their ideas for working in Rome and making the best possible use of a residency
at the British School. Awards are made solely on the basis of equal opportunity
- on the individual merits of each application and without regard to any other
consideration. Members of the Abbey Council may not be canvassed by candidates
nor will they discuss the merits of any application. The Abbey Council's
decision is final.
9. Conditions of acceptance The
Scholar and Fellows must be prepared to learn Italian before going to Rome, and
during their stay. They are obliged to submit a report to the Abbey Council and
to the British School at Rome on completion of their residence. |
