How to apply for the Scholarship and Fellowships
The Abbey Scholarship offers an emergent painter a full
academic year at the British School at Rome, from October
2008 to June 2009, while the Abbey Fellowships offer mid-career
painters three months at the School during the same
period. There
is no age limit. Abbey Awards are open to citizens
of the UK and the US and to painters of other nationalities
resident in the UK or US for at least five years.
Application forms
(which are the same for both the Scholarship and the Fellowships) may be
downloaded from this website or obtained from: the Administrator, Abbey
Awards, 43 Carson Road, London SE21 8HT, UK. Please send a self-addressed and
(if in the UK) stamped envelope. Applications are accepted from October
1st.
When completing the application form, candidates must
decide whether they wish to apply for the Scholarship
or for a Fellowship. They must submit a CD with a powerpoint presentation with not more than 8 examples of their recent work (please note that slides can not longer be accepted),
and give the names of two referees, who will be contacted
if the candidate is shortlisted. The entrance fee of
£20 or $50 must be sent with this form. More detailed
information accompanies the application form.
The closing date for 2008 applications is 15 January 2008.
The shortlist will be completed during February, and selected
candidates will be asked to attend interviews with members of the Abbey Council
(at their own expense) in London in the first half of March. Candidates from
the United States may be interviewed by telephone, but experience suggests that
they have a better chance of success if they come to London for the interview.
In making awards, the Abbey Council Selection Committee will assess all
applications in relation to : the quality of applicants' creative output, the
suitability of their qualifications, and the appropriateness of their ideas for
working in Rome and making the best possible use of a residence at the British
School. Awards are made solely on the basis of equal opportunity - on the
individual merits of each application and without regard to any other
consideration. Members of the Abbey Council must not be canvassed by
candidates, nor will they discuss the merits of any application.
The Abbey Council's decision is Final. Scholars and
Fellows must be prepared to learn some Italian before going to Rome. They are
obliged to submit a report to both the Abbey Council and the British School at
Rome at the end of their tenure. |
